2008 Learning100 Fall Conference

"3 Day Fall Conference Helps Private Practice Owners Solve
The 3 Critical Roadblocks to Success in 2008-2009"

Last Summer I Read A 100 Page Research Report That, Frankly, Scared Me...

In fact, there are 3 major vulnerabilities that are threatening private practices right now, and many don't yet even know what they are. Here is a quick explanation:

  1. Last summer Dr. Carol Utay from Pittsburgh insisted that I read an extensive research report about a new form of competition that is literally sweeping the nation : "Brain Fitness Software." It is a group of software companies that offer a new kind of competition to our practices. These "competitors" promise to give people what they want: a simple solution to learning problems that they can do at home.

When I finished reading I understood why she thought it was so critical.

These programs can really confuse parents who are considering bringing their students to us. Do these programs really deliver on their promise? Should we be using these things? Do they really take the place of things we are doing?

In fact, in the last few days we've had parents calling to ask our opinion of specific software titles.

We need to be able to answer them.

The brain software industry more than doubled, growing $125,000,000 since 2005!

And the research study predicts that soon we will
even be competing with our local fitness centers!

We've got to know more about this approaching tidal wave before it engulfs us.

  1. We are facing at least several more months of a "down economy." There are 2 kinds of practice owners that should be worried: first , those who don't have enough clients, and second , those who do have enough clients but are doing no or minimal marketing.

If the economy hasn't yet touched you, it will. Honestly, I thought we had "hit bottom" and then the government bailouts started. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

If you aren't using multiple marketing systems , you are on a slippery slope that only appears firm. You are ripe for a single competitor to come in and take all your business.

And that competitor may just be the Brain Software companies that never physically move into your community!

  2. Most of the people in our business have built little practices that help a few students. While just about everyone wants "a few more students," I don't find too many who really go after making a huge impact in their communities.

We allow ourselves to "play small."

We put restrictions on our growth. We tell ourselves that, by "staying small" we can remain personal. If we get too big we won't be able to control the quality of what we do. If we get too big we don't have the time to keep up with it all. We are already working too many hours as it is.

The truth is we have the power of the atom bomb but often
we are only lighting off firecrackers.

If we are ever going to have the kind of impact our society needs, we have to step out from behind all those limiting beliefs and start to think and act bigger about what we bring to the world. There are 14,700,000 school kids who need our help. There are at least 30,000,000 adults whose lives could be impacted through our services.

And for many of us, time is running out.

Because these factors are real, effecting us right now, we want to invite you to join us for a very special, one time conference on October 28-30. We are hosting this event specifically to address 5 major topics designed to strengthen your business right now :

  • Understanding the new tidal wave in brain software - Special guest Dr. Carol Utay from Pittsburgh will take you "by the hand" and clearly lead you through the maze of software programs hitting the market. She will explain the "good and the bad," as well as everything you need to know about a dozen specific software titles.

This is your new competition. Already there is confusion among the public about the extent and limits of these programs. ***These programs can either help our practices or they can do real damage.***

In this session you will learn what each program does, what it doesn't do, how to add it to your "tool box," how to evaluate new programs as they hit the market, and more. We simply MUST understand this "tidal wave" that is overtaking our industry so that we can help steer students into whatever therapies will be the most effective for them.

Parents are making the choice to use software INSTEAD of our recommendations. Is this appropriate for their child? Should we be also recommending software in addition to or instead of our other core programs? What should our response be to this new threat? This day will be spent giving you an overview of various software that are available NOW. Software that some people are basing their entire remediation practice around.

Can you respond to a parent who tells you, "My pediatrician recommended that I do Cogmed at home instead of the program you recommended." Is there a student that would make sense with? You need to be ready with answers.

You will have the opportunity to get a solid overview of: Fast ForWord, Brainware Safari, Captain's Log, Nintendo DS, Cog-Med, Posit Science with both Brain Fitness and InSight, Eye Q, Heart Math, Play Attention, Earobics, Aleks, Smart Moves, Interactive Metronome, Move to Learn, and more

By the time the day is finished you will be ready to add the appropriate software to your "tool box" and be able to talk to parents and professionals about each program's strengths and weaknesses, whether you use it or not.
  • Marketing, especially in a down economy - From A-Z what you need to be doing to keep getting new clients.

There ae those who's practice is now full but they don't do any marketing. If this is you, YOU ARE IN A DANGEROUS PLACE!!!!

Keeping your practice in the forefront of your community, and getting new clients, continuously, is foundational to your practice. We will cover the secrets of how to market your business with ease...using many of the materials yo already have written.

Among other parts of this day will be the new Empathy in Education Series: The Dyslexia Simulation which will be made available for your use. What is it like to be Dyslexic? This is a prepackaged scripted, step-by-step program that you can deliver to your community. It is great for new and prospective clients.

By the end of the session, you will have a prioritized plan for how to market your practice using multiple marketing channels. You should never again be the best kept secret in your community.

  •   Think bigger about your practice, remove the beliefs that are keeping you small, and bring more to your community. Special guest Eva Love will share ideas about making your business more of what you want it to be and what your community needs it to be. Eva has been successful both in the corporate world, as a private practitioner, and as a business consultant.

Eva brings the ability to help us see where we are putting our efforts and where we are getting in our own way. She is loving and understanding and fun. More than that, she will help you think about what you are bringing to your community and how you can have a greater impact right where you are. Several of you already know Eva and the incredible work that she does.

  • Student Triage - What are your most challenging students? Do you have any that just "stump" you? We will spend a couple of hours brainstorming solutions for "difficult students." You will get several perspectives from our panel.

  • Business Triage - What are your biggest business challenges? What do you look at as "unsolvable?" What is holding you back? Let our panel brainstorm solutions to the things that keep you from having the business you really want.

  • Thursday afternoon you will learn about several new programs that will allow you to substantially boost your success with students with attention issues (FACT) and processing speed deficits (SPRINT). Dr. Carol Utay will share with you her intensive 60 hour program to train a student to gain control over internal and external distractions using a combination of structured activities and mindfulness. The long awaited SPRINT program that moves processing speed and even increases scores on SATs, other timed tests, reading fluency, increased math speed, and many other applications will also be demonstrated.

  • And yes there are a couple of more surprises planned! This is going to be an AMAZING 3 days. It will be useful, practical, and stimulating.

"State of the Union"

We are in the business of solving learning problems.

  • We don't compensate, we don't accommodate, we solve.
  • We build skills that allow all students of average and above average intelligence to compete on a "level playing field."
  • We remove the need for special considerations because a child has learning problems.
  • We re-wire the brain - form new neuro-pathways - that allow information to be processed in accurate and efficient ways.

Our business/industry is still in its infancy. It is not acknowledged by most "experts" or the general public.

Schools often don't "get it." Solving learning problems (including learning disabilities and dyslexia) are completely foreign concepts to most people. While our universities teach how to apply remedial curriculum, they still aren't teaching courses in remediating the disabilities.

Even the big organizations (google them and see) all say that we can't do what we do every day.

One day the "big money research" will confirm what we already know. And after decades of fighting for the legitimate recognition we deserve, we will be "overnight successes."

But, until then, we have work to do.

If you have ever looked at Moore's acceptance curve of new ideas (you can find it in Seth Godin's book Purple Cow ), we are still in stage 2 (early adopters). The majority hasn't yet found us. We aren't "common knowledge." There is a gap that must be jumped before the general public embraces our services.

Until that gap is bridged, our businesses are vulnerable to many factors.
Some of those factors are threatening us
right now.

P. S.On a personal note - We work very hard to bring private practice owners what they really need in order to grow and be a real service to their communities. Owners often don't immediately see the value of what we bring. But over time, we save people hundreds of hours, a "ton" of heartache and frustration, as well as lots of money. Go to the learning100.com web site and sign up today. We know how badly your community needs what you have to offer.
