Taking Giant Steps (1 of 4) - Developing Your Business

David Stowell

There are 4 things you can do to make huge strides in the development of your business. I call these the Four Giant Steps. They are (in order):

  1. Read the book The E-Myth Revisited – Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About it by Michael Gerber
  2. Build and implement daily/weekly measurement devices in your business (metrics)
  3. Build / Compile your mailing list
  4. Begin a systematic marketing program

Let’s start with the first step.

If you haven’t read Michael Gerber’s E-Myth Revisited, it is an absolute MUST. Our one-on-one coaching clients read the first third of the book before we even begin working together.

Why? Because Gerber describes and illustrates what I believe is the key distinction that makes the biggest difference in all of our efforts:

What it means to build a
business vs. having a job.

Until you have this distinction at the front of your thinking, all you have is an endless array of “to do’s.” One of Gerber’s saying’s is this: “When you go to work each day, don’t go to work IN your business, but rather go to work ON your business.”

WARNING - Reading a book is almost always a “quadrant 2” activity...it is important, but not urgent. Please don’t put this one off. I know that in the business section of our workshops we mention buying this book, and then we go on to many other subjects. Let me go back and emphasize it now – Get the book and read it! If you can’t find it at your local bookstore, Amazon carries it.

I have a friend from church that is thinking about going into business for himself. He read the book and is SO GLAD. Whether you are new in business or an “old hand,” if you haven’t read it, READ IT! You’ll be glad you did.

By the way, Gerber has also written The E-Myth for two specific businesses – one for contractors and one for the medical profession. If you know anyone in these industries, encourage them to get the book and read it!
